Elementary Health and Safety Education
During the school year of 2003-2004 a new program was launched called Elementary Health and Safety Education. Officers of the Normal Police Department wrote this curriculum. The program was first offered during the fall of 2003 to all 2nd and 4th grade students in Normal's Unit 5 Schools. Officer Bob Droege is currently teaching this program.
The 2nd Grade Elementary Health and Safety curriculum focuses on the following area of interests:
- awareness of traffic and community safety
- safe use of medicines and drugs
- positive choices and behaviors
- dealing with strangers
The 4th Grade Elementary Health and Safety curriculum focuses on the same areas of interest as the second grade curriculum but with a more in depth and detailed look in each of these areas.
Each grade receives four weeks of teaching and the officer spends most of the time in the school building up relationships with the students and faculty. Officers have also been known to attend recess, physical education classes and lunch at the schools. In the 03-04 School year over 1000 Students successfully completed the Elementary Health and Safety Program. The number one goal of Elementary Health and Safety is the reduction in demand for drugs.
